Easy Granny Stitch Crochet Sweater

Why Love This Pattern?

  1. Easy Construction: The structure of the sweater is straightforward, consisting of just front and back panels that you seam together, making it an easy project to follow.
  2. Minimal Sewing: One of the highlights of this pattern is the minimal amount of sewing involved. The sleeves are crocheted in the round, eliminating the need to sew them on, which can be a tedious process.
  3. Customizable Fit: Whether you prefer a form-fitting sweater or a boxy, oversized look, you can adjust the starting chain to suit your style. The only key is to keep the chain count divisible by three.
  4. Seamless Look: When done correctly, the seams are nearly invisible, providing a cleaner, more professional look to the finished garment.
  5. Creative Flexibility: The pattern allows for creative expression through color changes. You can mix and match as many colors as you like or keep it simple with a single color.

How To Crochet Granny Stitch Sweater

Materials Needed:

  • 6.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn (suggested yarn works with 5.5mm hook; you can size up one hook size)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers

Step-by-Step Pattern

Front and Back Panels:

  1. Chain Foundation:
    • Make a chain that reaches your shoulder-to-shoulder measurement. Ensure the chain is divisible by three.
    • Example: Chain 66, then add 3 more to make 69 chains in total.
  2. Row 1:
    • Chain an additional 2 (for turning).
    • Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and then single crochet in each chain across.
  3. Row 2 (Start Granny Stitches):
    • Chain 2, turn your work.
    • Double crochet into the same stitch as the chain 2.
    • Skip two stitches, then put three double crochets into the third stitch. Repeat this pattern across the row.
    • In the last stitch, put two double crochets.
  4. Row 3:
    • Cut the yarn if you want to change colors.
    • Attach the new yarn, chain 2, and turn.
    • In the space right below the starting chain stitch, do three double crochets.
    • In each space across, put three double crochets.
    • At the end, put a double crochet in the top of the chain 2 from the previous row.
  5. Row 4:
    • Chain 2, turn your work.
    • Put a double crochet in the same stitch as the chain 2.
    • Continue with three double crochets in each space across.
    • End with two double crochets in the last space.
  6. Repeat Rows 3 and 4:
    • Continue alternating between Row 3 and Row 4 until the piece reaches your desired length. Mark rows for easy reference.

Shoulder Panels:

  1. Joining Panels:
    • Hold the piece against your body, marking where you want the neck hole to be with stitch markers.
    • Ensure even spacing on both sides.
  2. Making Short Rows:
    • Join yarn where the panel ended.
    • Do a set of shorter rows to create shoulder height. Start with a row 3 repeat.
    • Alternate similarly between Row 3 and Row 4 until the shoulder panel has the desired length.
  3. Repeat for the Second Panel:
    • Create another identical piece.

Seaming the Panels:

  1. Seaming Shoulders:
    • Use a tapestry needle and whip stitch method to seam the shoulders together. Ensure clean seams.
  2. Seaming the Sides:
    • Seem the sides, leaving enough room for armholes.
    • Use color changes to align the panels correctly.

Finishing:

  1. Neckline Border:
    • Join yarn at the neckline opening.
    • Chain 1, place half double crochets evenly around the neckline.
    • Do two rows of half double crochet for a nice border.
  2. Bottom Border:
    • Join yarn at the hem of the body panel.
    • Chain 1, perform half double crochets evenly around the bottom.
    • Again, two rows are recommended for uniformity.

Sleeves:

  1. Join Yarn for Sleeves:
    • Attach the yarn at the underarm seam.
    • Work granny stitch clusters around the armhole using the same pattern.
  2. Row 1 (Sleeves):
    • Chain 2, continue with clusters. Work around existing stitches, following the pattern.
  3. Row 2 (Sleeves):
    • Chain 2 and repeat the cluster pattern.
  4. Alternating Rows for Sleeves:
    • Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you reach the desired sleeve length.

Optional Sleeve Decreasing:

  1. Decreasing:
    • To taper the sleeves, perform a half double crochet decrease as guided in the video every specified number of stitches.

Notes:

  • Check the video for visual reference.
  • Wet/block your project for a good drape at the end.

Tips:

  • Use stitch markers for even seaming.
  • Adjust length based on personal preference for fit and boxiness.

Finished! Enjoy crafting your very own granny stitch crochet sweater!
