How to Crochet Teacups – Step by Step Guide

Introduction

These teacups measure four inches from tip to tip for the saucer and about one and three-quarter inches high. The purpose of making these teacups, which can serve as cute containers for snacks like peanuts or candies.

Materials Needed

  • A small cup (Alana uses Wendy’s ketchup cups, but you can use similar sized cups or medicine cups from Amazon)
  • Sport weight yarn (a 3-weight yarn) in multiple colors. For 12 teacups, 2 skeins of the main color and 1 skein of each additional color are needed.
  • A 2.25 mm crochet hook
  • A needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun (for attaching the handle)

Instructions

Step 1: Creating the Teacup Base

  1. Start with a Slip Knot
    • Create a slip knot on your hook and chain 6.
  2. Form a Ring
    • Slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring and chain 1.
  3. Round 1
    • Double crochet 18 into the ring. Slip stitch to the first double crochet to close the round.
  4. Round 2
    • Chain 1, double crochet into the first double crochet, double crochet into the next, chain 2. Repeat around, ending with a slip stitch to the first double crochet.
  5. Round 3
    • Slip stitch into the next double crochet and chain 2 space. Chain 1, work (2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet) in each chain 2 space around, finishing with a slip stitch to the first double crochet.
  6. Rounds 4-6
    • Repeat Round 3 for three more rounds.

Step 2: Crafting the Saucer

  1. Round 7 (Forming the Base)
    • Work from round 6’s chain 2 space, double crochet into round 3’s chain 2 space. Slip stitch, chain 1, work (2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet) in each of round 3’s chain 2 spaces around, ending with a slip stitch.
  2. Round 8
    • Slip stitch to the next double crochet and chain 2 space. Work (2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet) in each chain 2 space, chain 2 between each shell, ending with a slip stitch.
  3. Round 9
    • Similar to Round 8, but instead, chain 3, single crochet in chain 2 spaces of previous round, chain 3, work (2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet) in each shell, ending with a slip stitch.

Step 3: Adding the Top Edge with Contrast Yarn

  1. Attaching the Contrast Yarn
    • Attach contrast color in any chain 2 space of Round 6. Chain 1, work (2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet) in each chain 2 space around, ending with a slip stitch and fastening off.

Step 4: Crafting the Handle

  1. Handles
    • Chain 20, single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
    • Work 3 single crochets in the last chain to rotate, single crochet in remaining loops on the other side.
  2. Edging
    • Attach contrast color, work single crochets into the chain edge, 2 single crochets in the last two single crochets, fasten off.

Step 5: Assembling the Teacup

  1. Attaching the Handle
    • Hot glue the handle to the top edge of the teacup, ensuring it’s securely attached.
