How To Crochet Rainbow Vest

The pattern creates a beautiful crochet project inspired by the original Pride flag for Pride Month. The pattern is casual and not a detailed tutorial, but it gives clear steps to create a waistcoat with vibrant granny rows.

Materials

  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Cotton yarn from the brand Yarn and Colors (Assorted colors reflecting the Pride flag)
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Abbreviations

  • ch: Chain
  • sl st: Slip Stitch
  • dc: Double Crochet
  • hdc: Half Double Crochet

Detailed Pattern Instructions

Back Panel

Step 1: Measurements

  1. Measure the widest part of your chest for a comfortable fit.
  2. Chain a length that is half of this measurement to the nearest multiple of 3.

Step 2: Row 1 – Foundation Row

  1. In the 2nd chain from the hook, make 1 row of half double crochet in the back bumps of the chain.
  2. At the end of the row, chain 1, cut the working yarn, and pull through to tie off.

Step 3: Row 2

  1. Attach a new color with a slip stitch where you’ve just tied off.
  2. Chain 3 and turn your work.
  3. In the next stitch, make 2 double crochet, chain 1, skip 2 stitches, and then make 3 double crochet in the same stitch to create clusters.
  4. At the end of the row, tie off.

Step 4: Row 3

  1. Bring back the white yarn and attach with a slip stitch where you’ve just tied off.
  2. Chain 3 and turn your work.
  3. Make 3 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 1, and make another 3 double crochet in the next chain space.
  4. At the end of the row, make 1 double crochet in the top of the chain of the previous row and then tie off.

Step 5: Row 4

  1. Change to the next color in the rainbow, attach with a slip stitch, chain 3, and turn your work.
  2. Make 2 double crochet in the same chain space, chain 1, and make 3 double crochet in the next chain space.
  3. At the end of the row, tie off.

Step 6: Repeat Rows 3 and 4

  1. Alternate between the white and rainbow rows to break up the color.
  2. Complete 16 granny rows, finishing on a white row.

Step 7: Shape the Armholes

  1. Tie on the yarn at the 5th chain space in and complete another 20 granny rows, finishing on a white row again.

Front Panels

Step 1: Row Setup

  1. Crochet the same number of rows as the back panel (36 granny rows in total).
  2. After 16 rows, tie the yarn on the 2nd chain space in to shape the armhole.

Step 2: Shape the Neckline

  1. Decrease the number of clusters for 9 rows to create a diagonal line.
  2. Stick to even rows for the rest of the panel.

Construction

  1. Place the finished panels right sides together.
  2. Slip stitch at the shoulder and side seams.
  3. Try on the project to ensure it fits.

Final Touches

  1. Finish off the raw edges around both armholes and the neckline.
  2. Make either 1 or 2 rows of half double crochet depending on the remaining white yarn.
  3. Sew in all ends.

Conclusion

Megan successfully creates a vibrant waistcoat inspired by the Pride flag, finishing off with neat edges using white yarn. The project fits well without needing to frog, and all that’s left are the final touches and sewing in ends. Enjoy wearing this beautiful piece for Pride Month!
