Steps to Crochet Mittens
Starting Off
Make a slip knot and chain nine.
Starting into the second chain from your hook, make a single crochet and continue making single crochets in every other chain.
- You will have eight single crochets in total at the end of your row.
- Chain one and turn your work.
- From now on, you will be making single crochets into the back loop only.
Creating the Body of the Mitten
- Continue with back loop single crochets for each row.
- At the end of row two, chain one and turn your work. Repeat row two until you have a total of 18 rows.
- Once you’ve completed 18 rows, chain one, fold the piece right sides together, and slip stitch it along the side.
- Turn it inside out to have the right side facing out.
Adding a Border
- Place one single crochet in each row around the side, giving you 18 stitches all around.
- Slip stitch with your first single crochet to complete the round.
Transitioning to Double Crochets
Chain two (this does not count as a stitch) and begin the next row with double crochets:
- Two double crochets in one stitch, followed by one double crochet in the next two stitches; repeat this pattern all around.
- After completing the round, you should have 24 double crochets.
Follow the pattern to increase the stitches in subsequent rounds until you reach a final round of 30 double crochets.
Forming the Thumb Hole
- In the fourth round, after completing 11 double crochets, skip eight stitches (creating the thumb hole) then continue with double crochet stitches around.
- After completing this round, you will have a total of 22 stitches.
Completing the Body
- Continue with double crochet stitches for four more rounds, maintaining the 22 stitches count.
- On the last round, perform 11 double crochet decreases to close the top of the mitten.
- Secure and cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing.
Finishing the Thumb
- Attach the yarn with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the thumb hole.
- Chain two and perform eight double crochets around the thumb hole for three rounds, decreasing as necessary to close off the thumb.
- Sew the opening closed with the yarn tail.
Final Touches
- Weave in any remaining tails with a needle to secure them.
- Turn the mitten inside out to have the right side facing outward.
Your crochet mitten is now complete and ready to keep your hands warm!
